WILLIAM F. WOLCOTT, III
BIOGRAPHY
Bill, who is a lifelong resident of Asheville in Western North Carolina, has an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a Juris Doctor degree from the UNC School of Law. He was admitted to the practice law in North Carolina in 1972 and remained active in the private practice of law for five decades, working primarily in real property law and creditors’ rights. Bill also worked for over 20 years as a Superior Court mediator certified by the N.C. Dispute Resolution Commission. He retired from the North Carolina law firm of Ward and Smith, P.A. in the winter of 2022. Though no longer an active member of the N. C. State Bar Bill still maintains limited active status as a pro bono attorney volunteering at Pisgah Legal Services, a 17-county WNC poverty law center, which he helped establish in the 1970’s, and with which he has enjoyed working for many years as a volunteer, board member and board chair. Bill has been active in his community over the years, including as Elder at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, President of the 28th Judicial District Bar, and as a long-time participant on the Folk Heritage Committee of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce.
